The monthly rent is only part of the cost. Many Japan rentals require several upfront payments before you receive the keys.

Initial costs can include deposit, key money, agency fee, guarantor company fee, renter insurance, lock change fee, cleaning fee, and first-month or prorated rent.
Why low rent can still be expensive
A lower-rent property with high key money and agency fees can require more cash upfront than a slightly higher-rent listing with zero key money.
How to compare listings
Ask for the full initial-cost quote and compare total cash needed, not only rent. Keep moving company, furniture, appliance, and utility setup costs separate.
